EU unveils European Innovation Act to unlock billions for innovators
Europe could be on the verge of a major overhaul in how promising technologies move from the laboratory to the marketplace. Ekaterina Zaharieva, Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, explained the potential impacts of the landmark initiative: With the European Innovation Act, we are tackling fragmentation head-on: one framework for IP valuation, one digital marketplace connecting buyers and sellers, and one simpler route for public procurement of cutting-edge research and development. That is the Europe we are building." How the European Innovation Act will tackle the funding gap A central problem for innovative companies is that investors and lenders find some of their most valuable assets hard to assess. Universities and research institutes call for at least €200 billion for Horizon Europe
EU-LIFE and six partner organisations publish today the joint statement Investing in what makes Europe strong as negotiations advance on the EU's long-term budget for 2028–2034 and the next Horizon Europe programme (FP10). We warn that the European Commission's proposed €175 billion budget falls short of the investment needed and call on EU Member States to increase it to at least €200 billion. Agreement on the EU budget and Horizon Europe's legal acts in time for the first funding calls to launch from 1 January 2028. Its publication coincides with Investing in What Makes Europe Strong: Research and Innovation in the Next EU Budget, a high-level event in Brussels co-organised by the same group of organisations.
